How to Identify Your Personal Values
Your values are the things you refuse to trade away, even when it would be easier. When you're living by them, life feels steady. When you're not, you feel restless, resentful, or worn down without knowing why.
Knowing your values makes decisions simpler. It's part of finding your purpose, and it's the first thing to get clear on.
What personal values are (and aren't)
Values are not rules, goals, or what you think you should care about. They are what you actually protect with your time, money, and energy.
A goal is something you finish. A value is something you keep living. "Run a 5K" is a goal. "Health" is a value.
The 4-step exercise
Step 1: Look at your peak moments
Write down three times you felt proud, fulfilled, or deeply like yourself. Be specific. What was happening? Who was there?
Step 2: Look at your frustrations
Now write down three times you felt angry, drained, or resentful. Frustration is often a value being stepped on. If unfairness makes you furious, fairness may be a core value. If chaos wears you out, order or peace may be.
Step 3: Name what was present
For each moment, ask what was being honored or violated. Use plain words: honesty, family, freedom, growth, faith, creativity, service, security, beauty, learning, courage.
Step 4: Narrow to your top five
Circle the words that repeat. Then narrow to five. If it's hard to cut, imagine you could only keep three. The ones you won't give up are your core values.
How to know you've got the right ones
A true value passes three tests:
- You'd keep living by it even if no one noticed.
- It has shown up in the choices you've already made.
- Living against it costs you something, like sleep, peace, or energy.
Values in conflict
Sometimes two values pull against each other, like security and freedom. That doesn't mean one is wrong. It means you're human. Ask which value matters more in this season, not forever.
Using your values
Put your five values somewhere you'll see them. Before a big decision, ask: "Which option honors my values?" It won't make every choice easy, but it makes it honest.
