Purpose
What Is My Purpose?
If you've ever asked yourself this question, you're not behind and you're not broken. You're paying attention.
Most people ask it at a turning point: after a loss, a job change, a season of burnout, or a quiet moment when life looks fine on paper but feels a little hollow. The question isn't a sign something is wrong. It's a sign something in you wants to be lived more fully.
What "purpose" actually means
Purpose is the reason behind your effort. It's the thread that connects what you care about, what you're good at, and who you want to help or become.
It is not a single job title. It is not one perfect answer you find on a mountaintop. For most people, purpose is a direction that gets clearer as you move toward it.
Purpose, passion, and calling
These words get mixed up, so here's a simple way to separate them:
- Passion is what energizes you.
- Calling is what you feel pulled to answer.
- Purpose is the larger "why" that can hold both, and it can show up in many different roles over a lifetime.
You can have purpose without a dramatic calling. Many people live purposefully in ordinary, steady ways.
Why it feels so hard to name
A few honest reasons:
- You've been doing what was needed, not what was true. Years of responsibility can bury your own preferences.
- You're looking for one big answer. Purpose usually shows up in pieces.
- You've been told to follow your passion, when what you needed was to notice your patterns.
- You're tired. It's hard to hear yourself when you're running on empty.
Three clues hiding in your own life
You don't need to invent your purpose. You can notice it.
What do you keep returning to? Look at the topics, problems, and people you come back to again and again, even when no one is asking you to.
What do people bring to you? The questions friends and coworkers ask you often point to a strength you treat as ordinary.
What stays with you? Think of moments when you felt most like yourself. What were you doing, and who were you doing it for?
A starting exercise
Take ten minutes with a pen and paper. Finish these sentences without editing yourself:
- I feel most alive when...
- The problem I can't stop thinking about is...
- People thank me for...
- If fear weren't in the way, I would...
Read your answers out loud. Circle any word that shows up more than once. That's your first clue.
